Wellbeing and Wellness

Our wellbeing framework...

Our programs are underpinned by The 5-Ways to Wellbeing: a set of practical lifestyle habits to help people be mentally fit.

The 5-Ways To Wellbeing (developed by the Royal Melbourne Hospital) are integrated into all our wellbeing and wellness activities; assisting people to discover the benefits of incorporating simple, sustainable lifestyle changes into their days.

This evidence-based model is an effective strategy to improve mental health and wellbeing, based on substantial research.

We incorporate this framework throughout psychosocial recovery service delivery; and also use it within our health promotion activities across other services too.

 Connect

Humans are wired for connection. Forming and strengthening bonds with loved ones and mates is an important part of the path to mental fitness, and can take a protective role in maintaining wellbeing through increased feelings of joy, security, belonging, and self-worth.

 Move

Being active contributes to overall wellbeing and aids in quicker recovery from physical and mental stress. Movement plays a major role in maintaining mental fitness by helping us to cope with challenges, increasing energy and confidence, improving mood, and enhancing quality of sleep.

 Learn

The adult brain is capable of rewiring itself. Challenging our minds with new skills, approaches, and information can increase our knowledge and improve strategic thinking skills, building confidence, sense of purpose, and capacity to recover from challenge and stress.

 Be

Being in the present moment is a great way to gain perspective, improve response and recovery times, and reduce stress. Presence of mind (‘mindfulness’) has a range of benefits in building mental fitness including greater self-awareness, increased adaptability, and the ability to better recognise how and when to seek help.

 Give

Acts of kindness help us to build connections and strengthen support networks, in addition to increasing confidence and the ability to cope with challenges and change. Altruistic behaviour releases endorphins, and boosts happiness for ourselves as well as the people we help.

We incorporate the 5-Ways into our planning work with people ensuring they have an

evidence-based way of supporting their personal recovery, wellness, and wellbeing journey.
