Work & SLES

Get help to build skills

for work and employment

School Leaver Employment Supports (SLES) is an early intervention approach for participants preparing for employment between the ages of 16-22 years of age. It is a goals based approach to assist the transition from school to employment. This is achieved through the provision of meaningful, individualised capacity building activities so young people can achieve their employment goals.

If you are in a different age group SchemeWise can help with your work and employment goals too. For example,  to look at what is required to change jobs and have a better one or investigate training options for a future job.

To investigate your work and employment options you will work with one of our coordinator, psychosocial coaches or counselling specialists.  You'll need to have either capacity building coordination funding OR Improved Daily Living funding.  If not, we can even help so long as you have Activities of Daily Living CORE funds in your plan (must be plan or self-managed).

If you have a coordinator already... our coaches and counsellors can still help.

You will work together with your dedicated SchemeWise coordinator, coach or counsellor to create your own personalised goals towards training, work and employment.

Whether you'd like to improve your interview or confidence skills, resume building or even work out what work skills you need to develop and how to access that help. The choice is yours.

As part of managing a participant’s work and employment barriers, SchemeWise coordinators, coaches and counsellors can:

support your unique pathway to employment

help you learn about your work and employment training needs and investigate options

develop a plan and set goals to help you realise your work and employment pathway

help foster partnerships from school to work in the local community

help your informal networks understand and support you towards work and employment

use knowledge and networks (as and if relevant) to engage and connect with employers

provide a report for your NDIS planning needs.

Each person’s SLES supports, work, training, skills development and employment needs will be different.  However, the following options from SchemeWise can help participants get ready for employment/work by increasing their capacity:

Money handling skills

Time management skills

Communication skills

Negotiation skills

Addressing work experience options (past and future - includes volunteering)

Develop confidence/competencies - hard and soft skills (plus resilience)

Personal presentation / grooming

Learning how to take instruction at work

Working with others

Understanding your and others rights

Ensuring work needs are clear and supportable (to keep you safe)

Support to address travel skills/needs

Note: In some cases SchemeWise may advise an individual may require more intensive support than can be offered on an episodic coaching/counselling basis in the above areas as we are NOT a training provider.  Where this may occur SchemeWise would generally seek to link you to community and/or accredited short courses to assist you as part of your goals and planning.

SchemeWise can also provide support for people looking for work with assessment around issues such as:

§ Mental and physical health conditions

§ Cognitive and learning conditions

§ Drug or alcohol use (harm minimisation)

§ Pain management or Sensory issues

§ Functional limitations

§ Diet and healthy living needs

§ Managing stressors / triggers

§ Low self-esteem or motivation

§ Low confidence about starting a new job

§ Uncertainty about what jobs you can do

§ Addressing previous workplace trauma

DISCLAIMER:

By necessity SchemeWise people will always support your right to examine, look at, consider, move toward and engage in meaningful work.  However, SchemeWise reserves the right to serviceability and your expectations being reasonable and achievable.  Having a plan and pathway with identified SMART-goals around your NDIS goals is an important focus as SchemeWise is unable to guarantee you that employment/work is achievable, despite each party's reasonable endeavours, and certainly within a defined singular NDIS plan period as multiple cycles of support may be necessary.  There may also be limitations within your NDIS funds which precludes a broader level of progress being achievable.  SchemeWise particularly reserves a right to not place you at risk, even when you cannot see such risk yourself.  This meets our requirements towards ensuring your personal safety, and the safety of others, under the NDIS Code of Conduct.  Thank you for your understanding.
